From the Gary Faules Collection: Drivers and Race Cars from the 1915 Vanderbilt Cup Races

In the second post featuring photos from his collection, race car driver, team owner and writer Gary Faules has provided these up close images of drivers and race cars  from the 1915 Vanderbilt Cup Race.


Howard Kroplick

#2 Duesenberg driven by Tom Alley. Completed 41 laps and finished 20th.

#4 Mercer driven by Eddie Pullen. Completed all 77 laps and finished 3rd, averaging 64.514 mph.

#8 Stutz driven by Earl Cooper in the American Grand Prix. Following the race, Cooper became ill. Harry Grant drove the same race car in the Vanderbilt Cup Race. After completing 53 laps, broke down due to water in gas tank and finished 17th.

#9 Peugeot driven by Dario Resta. Completed all 77 laps and finished 1st, averaging 66.443 mph.

#12 Simplex Zip driven by Louis Disbrow. Completed all 77 laps and finished 8th, averaging 60.591 mph.W.L. Hughson, Chairman of the Vanderbilt Race Committee, was seen in the mechanician's seat.

#15 Delage driven by Claude Newhouse. Completed all 77 laps and finished 6th, averaging 62.215 mph.

#19 Duesenberg driven by Eddie O'Donnell. After completing 54 laps, wrecked racer and finished 16th.

#17 Maxwell driven by Eddie Rickenbacker (not shown here). After completing 7 laps, develped engine trouble and finished 28th. Originally scheduled to drive a Peugeot.

#26 Stutz driven by Howdy Wilcox. Completed all 77 laps and finished 2nd, averaging 64.752 mph.

#31 Overland driven by Tom McKelvey. Flagged after 74 laps and finished 12th.

#33 Hercules driven by Harold Hall. After completing 14 laps, developed engine trouble and finished 27th.

After Dario Resta retired from racing (photo # 9) he became the New York (Manhattan) dealer for the English Sunbeam cars. Many expensive European cars were imported into the USA via the port of New York, and minus any coachwork. They had bodies designed and built here as the lack of a body on an imported car   saved a lot on import fees.
